The FDA Warns Consumers About Adverse Events Associated With Apetamin

Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a warning to consumers about adverse effects associated with Apetamin — an unregulated drug illegally sold in the United States via online channels.

The FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System dashboard ensures the public can view all adverse event reports filed by the pharmaceutical industry, professionals who work with said pharmaceuticals, and consumers. The FDA uses the data in this system to evaluate drugs for safety and efficacy.

What Exactly Is Apetamin?

Apetamin contains the antihistamine cyproheptadine, which increases appetite. This helps consumers achieve their desired weight gain — but with potentially harmful side effects.

Apetamin is manufactured internationally and is typically sold online via social media advertisements, illicit websites, and in some brick-and-mortar stores. The FDA has put safeguards in place to restrict importation and issued a warning to consumers.

What are the Adverse Effects of Apetamin?

The FDA’s warning was based on several research studies and cases of adverse effects in those who consistently used Apetamin on a regular basis for a set period of time.

According to the FDA, Apetamin is known to include symptoms including but not limited to:

  • Decreased mental alertness
  • Decreased motor coordination (such as the ability to operate a motor vehicle)
  • Hallucinations
  • Convulsions
  • Decreased breath and heart rates
  • Rash
  • Low blood pressure
  • Anemia
  • Frequent urination
  • Dryness or soreness of the throat
  • Headache
  • Coma
  • Death
